Kane: I use Ronaldo and Messi as motivation

Tottenham star Harry Kane revealed he used Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as motivation to be among the world s best.

Kane, 24, has made another bright start to the campaign with six goals in seven games in all competitions.

The England international has reached the 30-goal mark in two of the past three seasons and netted 28 in the other, leading to discussions over where he stood among the world s best forwards.

Kane said being compared to Real Madrid star Ronaldo and Barcelona maestro Messi gave him plenty of motivation.

I use it, he told UK newspapers.

With social media these days it s difficult to stay away from it.

I want to be one of the best players in the world, so when people put it up and I see I am close to those players,…

Sunderland target Coleman steps down as Wales manager

Chris Coleman has resigned from his position as Wales manager amid speculation he is set to take over at Championship club Sunderland.

Coleman s reputation sky-rocketed after leading Wales previously without a major tournament appearance since 1958 to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, but he was unable to follow that up with qualification for next year s World Cup in Russia.

Wales were beaten by Republic of Ireland in their crucial final match of the qualifying campaign, and subsequent friendlies against France and Panama have proven to be Coleman s last matches in charge.

Sunderland, who are bottom of England s second tier following their relegation from the Premier League last season, have been without a manager since sacking Simon Grayson in October.

Galtier rues missed PSG chance for statement victory after Mbappe makes history

Christophe Galtier felt Paris Saint-Germain could have delivered a bigger victory after Kylian Mbappe made Ligue 1 history in their 3-1 win over Lens.

The forward became the club s all-time top goalscorer in the competition after he struck in the first half amid a ruthless purple patch at Parc des Princes.

Further goals inside a blistering nine-minute spell for Vitinha and Lionel Messi helped the hosts run rampant against their title rivals, who had Salis Abdul Samed sent off beforehand.

But even with a comfortable result, Galtier felt his side could have delivered a more impressive second-half performance to match the occasion.

It was important [to get the win], he told Canal+. It was a pleasure to win. We benefited from the numerical advantage [we had]…

Ronaldo should be intimidated by Zidane – Ferrara

Cristiano Ronaldo should feel intimidated at the thought of being coached by Zinedine Zidane, former Juventus defender Ciro Ferrara has said.

The World Cup-winning former France star was named as head coach of Real Madrid this week following the sacking of Rafael Benitez.

Ex-Madrid boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo suggested that Zidane could be undermined by the Portugal star if he allows his ego to get the better of him during the Santiago Bernabeu icon s spell in charge.

But Ferrara, who played alongside Zidane at Juventus during his own glittering playing career, is confident the 43-year-old will comfortably hold sway in a notoriously volatile dressing-room.

When asked if Zidane may feel apprehensive in working with Ronaldo, Ferrara told Omnisport: Well, actu…

Del Bosque resignation from Spain confirmed, set to stay on at RFEF

Vicente del Bosque s resignation as Spain coach has been confirmed, but the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is set to retain his services in a different capacity.

Following Spain s round-of-16 exit from Euro 2016 at the hands of Italy, Del Bosque announced his intention to leave the role.

The 65-year-old s departure has now been formalised, but the RFEF will ensure his expertise remains with the federation.

The president of the RFEF, Angel Maria Villar, and the national team coach, Vicente del Bosque, have held a meeting in Madrid on July 4 in which the coach informed the president of the RFEF of his decision not to continue at the head of the national team, an official statement read.

Figo hopes Messi grasps ´last chance´ of World Cup glory

Former Portugal star Luis Figo expects Lionel Messi to raise his game at the World Cup, which he believes could be the Argentine s last chance to lift the football s most famous trophy.

Figo, whose five-year spell at Barcelona ended in 2000 four years before Messi broke through at Camp Nou highlighted the differences between international and club football when assessing the 30-year-old s chances of success in Russia.

Messi made his World Cup debut in 2006 when Argentina reached the quarter-finals and was part of the team that made the last eight in 2010, before helping them to a first final in 24 years in 2014.

But the five-time Ballon d Or winner has only showed glimpses of his very best football on international football s biggest stage and Figo told Omnisport…

Cuba 0-2 United States: Wondolowski and Green down hosts in Havana

The United States first international friendly on Cuban soil since 1947 ended with Chris Wondolowski and Julian Green inspiring a 2-0 win, as the hosts wasted several chances.
The two countries restored diplomatic relations in July 2015 after decades of political tension and Friday s meeting was their first in Cuba in any capacity since a World Cup qualifier in 2008.
USA unsurprisingly looked superior technically, but the Cubans enjoyed the better chances throughout, with Ethan Horvath forced into a few saves before the break.
Horvath was then rescued by the post in the second half as Maykel Reyes went close, just a few moments before substitute Wondolowski opened the scoring at the other end.
Cuba struck the post again through Alejandro Gomez and were made to rue their profligacy…

CAS rejects Serbian appeal against Kosovo UEFA membership

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed an appeal from the Football Association of Serbia (FAS) to annul Kosovo s membership of UEFA.

Last May, the Football Federation of Kosovo (FFK) became UEFA s 55th member association at its Congress in Budapest, with the motion passing by 28 votes to 24.

Kosovo then joined FIFA one week later, allowing it entry into the current qualification campaign for Russia 2018.

Serbia has not recognised the Kosovan state since it declared its independence in 2008 and, although CAS ruled the FAS had a case, it upheld UEFA s decision to admit the FFK.

A statement from CAS read: The CAS panel in charge of this matter noted that FAS had both standing to sue in this matter and reasonable cause to file its appeal, cons…

Ryan Mason to remain at Tottenham in assistant coach role under Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham have announced Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff with Ryan Mason staying on at the club in an assistant coach capacity.

Former Spurs midfielder Mason took charge of the final six matches of the 2022-23 campaign, but doubts were cast over his long-term future.

Real Madrid 2-1 Chelsea: Vazquez and Diaz on target as Blues lose again

Lucas Vazquez and Brahim Diaz scored as Real Madrid ran out 2-1 victors over Chelsea on Tuesday.

In the final game of their U.S. tour, Chelsea failed to recover after going 2-0 down inside the opening 27 minutes at the Bank of America Stadium.

Vazquez s deflected shot crept into the bottom-left corner to open the scoring in the 19th minute, with Dani Ceballos claiming to have got a touch, though the replays were inconclusive.

There were no question marks over Madrid s second goal, with Vinicius Junior sliding a ball in behind for Diaz, who coolly rounded Chelsea s new goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen before slotting in from a tight angle.

Raheem Sterling squandered a great chance to tee up Christopher Nkunku for a tap-in, though Chelsea did pull one back when N…
